My area of responsibility is to manage the insurance claims that our clients have when unfortunate, but insurable incidents occur for our clients.

What's your job about?

My employer is a large insurance broker, providing access to a wide range of insurance products and expertise to individuals and small-to-large businesses and companies. My area of responsibility is to manage the insurance claims that our clients have when unfortunate, but insurable incidents occur for our clients. This involves lodging claims with insurers, liaising with claims officers at insurers, assessors, trades, and clients in order to ensure an effective and efficient resolution of their claims. This requires a large amount of communication via phone, email, online platforms and occasionally in person.  Occasionally I will assist with the broking duties, which in summary involves understanding the risks a client faces and wishes to insure against, then finding the best coverage for the best price in order to cover this risk and placing business between the insurers and the client. The wide variety, of risks, products, potential claims, and outcomes, makes the job interesting and has been a great learning experience for the beginning of my career in the insurance industry.

What's your background?

I was raised in Bacchus Marsh in western Victoria until I was 21 years old. After high school, I completed a four-year double degree in teaching and arts majoring in mathematics and history at ACU in Melbourne. I then taught as a classroom teacher at a Catholic all-girls high school in eastern Victoria for two years before returning to study a Master of Actuarial Studies at Monash University. After this two-year course, I secured employment at PSC Insurance Brokers through the recruitment consultants at Fuse Recruitment and have been working there since February 2019.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, we have other graduates with diverse backgrounds currently doing the same job at our company. I would suggest that the job would be suitable for candidates that have skills or qualities in communication, organisation, and adaptability.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

What I love most about the job is when brokers come to me and ask for my advice on whether certain incidents for their clients can be claimed using insurance as it requires analysis and expertise to determine this, for which only someone working in my field would be able to confidently advise, giving us a level of dependability and reliance.

What are the limitations of your job?

The greatest limitation to the job is that the work is never finished, and often you must wait for others in order to be able to continue with the work. The key is organisation and efficiency to get the most amount of work completed in hours you have each day.

  • Learn everything you can about your industry before you enter it, as learning, development, and understanding can take a backseat sometimes in a busy high-paced working environment.
  • Ask more questions.
