Pros & Cons

  • The people I work with are so very supportive. It is also great to be part of a multidisciplinary organization. Any questions I have regarding another discipline are just a Teams message away from an answer.
  • Great mentoring - Amazing team & people - Senior employees motivate young graduates to push themselves - Interesting & variety of work
  • Working on a wide range of projects around Australia/overseas. The people I work with and the knowledge and time they are willing to share to help you learn
  • Good opportunities to explore different types of work, and in different environments. Travelling for work. Work with a range of professionals at different levels. Very clear structure and progression.
  • The people are really genuine, it really feels like the team wants everyone to have the best opportunities they can and support each other to produce the best results. Have never been made to feel like my development isn't important and feels like people and the company as a whole genuinely want to create an enjoyable workplace and help graduates grow.
  • Keeping your hours to budget. Sometimes things take longer because you are new, and it is stressful making sure tasks are done within the timeframe set.
  • A good work-life balance can be hard to achieve working 8-5, 10 days a fortnight. Especially when delivery dates are approaching and some additional working hours are sometimes expected.
  • Working with timesheets can be difficult when you are running out of tasks to complete, however, my team is great at handing out new work when I am out of tasks to complete
  • Not much for me personally, but I know others have had issues with little support from upper management or unreasonable expectations from line managers
  • The occasional short timeframes for delivery of projects that I have been pulled into last minute.

Regular jobs are posted for horizontal movement in a company. Interests me as a new grad who can still go into new departments with an open mind. I can rotate into another department as a grad too.

Corporate Social Responsibility
The CSR is great - there is a greater emphasis placed on the company's commitment to ESG principles and sustainability in the work GHD does.

Culture

Culture
The culture within the office is great and everyone I've spoken to within and beyond my team is friendly and helpful. GHD's culture in terms of the hierarchy feels quite egalitarian in that people in leadership / higher positions also feel approachable/relatable and treat everyone with respect regardless of experience level.

Diversity

Diversity
I am comfortable being out as non-binary at work which is a huge testament to our LGBTQIA+ acceptance. There is a considerable effort being made to support minority groups.

Satisfaction
I work on a range of projects, with clients typically being utilities or government. I have had exposure to a range of technical work, client engagement and business development. I also think GHD does a good job of engaging young professionals in all aspects of the visit (i.e. logistics/operations/business cases/recruitment). The structure feels flat, and everyone is approachable.

I am extremely happy with the managers in my team. They are social and connect well with the team while maintaining a professional atmosphere. They are very happy to accommodate whatever you need to improve your work-life balance.

Office Work Environment
Office space is good. We use a hot desking system that took some time to get used to but seems to be working now. I do not have an allocated desk in the office and book each day but this has not been a problem so far

Recruitment
I found the interview process great. Clear questions, and it didn't feel like an interview, more like a conversation. I had opportunities to ask my own questions. Afterwards, they were clear about response timeframes etc and I started working quickly, which I appreciated.

Although I have been happy with my pay so far, it is not remarkable by industry comparison in my opinion, and I expect appropriate increases as I move through my career and up the corporate ladder.

Training
6.8
Training
The formal training is pretty general, not job specific but it gives all the graduates and new starters a good idea of how the company operates. The on-the-job training has been great. There are a lot of seniors who are happy to teach you and help you develop your skills as long as you ask.

Work Hours
GHD encourages us to come into the office whenever possible but there is a good amount of flexibility to work from home. If I have personal commitments such as an appointment, it's never been an issue to leave work for a few hours and either make up that time later in the day or take a partial day of personal leave.

A lot of the work we do is directly related to reducing our environmental impact as a society, and all the work we do is informed by environmental considerations.
