Pros & Cons

  • 1. Remuneration 2. The types of deals you get put on as a junior are great. They give you a lot of responsibility, which is a great opportunity.
  • The people, culture, benefits, interesting clients and matters
  • I have endless opportunities to participate in complex and interesting commercial and pro bono matters. I also love working for a law firm that is genuinely committed to progressive social justice ideals.
  • Gilbert + Tobin is an egalitarian workplace that gives graduates and junior lawyers the opportunity to be heard. Personally, I have benefited from this immensely, having had the opportunity to get involved in matters and work streams of interest and accelerate my personal and professional development.
  • Quality of work, limited hierarchy, inclusive culture, training opportunities, and support structure (both professional and personal) are available for a graduate or junior.
  • Having to work late every now and again.
  • Tight deadlines can be challenging at times.
  • Not having control over my day or the work that I complete, and trying to manage other junior colleagues expectations while doing work for partners.
  • The potential for unforeseen, arduous deadlines to spring up, providing challenging short-term periods
  • The ups and downs of work are sometimes hard to manage. There are large peaks of working long hours and then quiet periods where it is hard to stay motivated.

Culture
It is a very friendly and collegiate environment, and help is readily available everywhere, whether it be from knowledgeable lawyers or partners. Everyone is invested in your development as a lawyer, and you feel supported at each stage. There are plenty of social events throughout the year, as well as other opportunities to get involved in and give back to the community. It is an inclusive workplace, and everyone makes you feel part of the team.

Office Work Environment
Very well thought out, pleasant, and designed to make communication easy and everyone approachable. There are no individual offices, and the working arrangement is the same for everyone. The dress code is also very flexible. You have the freedom to wear your desired outfit and be yourself.

Recruitment
8.1
Recruitment
The firm shows curiosity in the candidate's passions outside of law, and is quite transparent about life as a graduate/lawyer at the firm throughout the recruitment process. Candidates have opportunities to connect with junior or mid-level lawyers throughout the recruitment process to find out more about the firm and the nature of work undertaken. Everyone involved in the recruitment process are quite receptive to follow-up requests and coffee catch-ups therefore there is plenty of opportunity to discern if the firm is the correct fit for the candidate. The clerkship process, while longer than most other firms, is still quite engaging and allows the candidate to show more of their personality and skills to the firm that would make them a perfect fit.
