What's your job about?

TAL is a life insurance company. I am currently in the Individual Risk Valuation team. We help the company to calculate and report its financial results.

A normal day consists of producing and checking financial projections. With the help of these projections, my team adds value to the company by helping it to successfully meet its financial objectives.

What's your background?

All my formal education from primary school through to university was done in Sydney. Before coming to TAL, I had internship experiences at other life insurance companies and consulting firms.

I decided to choose an actuarial job path because I can continuously challenge myself.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The culture at TAL is the best in the country in my completely unbiased opinion. People are super friendly in my team and always willing to support your development. The work is also challenging and interesting to me as I get to produce results that show the financial health of the company and how we can maintain our current position and further grow.

What are the limitations of your job?

The work can be challenging at first for someone with limited technical skills. This pushes you to learn and adapt fast which I personally enjoy but may be unsuitable for others.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Improve your coding skills with different languages such as R and SQL as soon as you can
  2. Have a better routine and be healthier (don’t sleep so late!)
  3. Find a hobby or passion so you can enjoy it during your free time as a student and as a full-time employee
