What's your job about?
Worley provides customers with a wide range of consulting and advisory services, and deep technical expertise across multiple projects. There are multiple teams; such as, design, engineering, finance, construction and quality assurance that makes a project come to life. As a graduate, I can get involved in a variety of tasks with any of these teams. I have worked on cable calculations that check if a specific cable can withstand the current flowing through it without damaging the device it is supplying to. Recently, I have been working on gathering and checking information that is required to get the off-shore rig up and running.
What's your background?
I grew up enjoying problem-solving, Math and Science in my High School. My love for engineering grew from watching my dad and granddad, both with an engineering background, fixing things around the house from plumbing to electronic devices, such as lights and blenders. Being a female, I wanted to break the stigma around ‘Women in Engineering’. I was passionate about Electrical Engineering and decided to embark on a journey to becoming my family’s first female engineer. After completing my studies in Auckland, I decided to relocate back to Taranaki where I grew up.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
No, working as a Graduate Electrical Engineer is an extension of the university where I applied what I learned in the books along with compliance to the New Zealand and the client standards. The basics help me get up to speed and really understand a given task. University taught me how to approach an engineering problem to find a solution. Without the drive to learn and basic electrical knowledge, it will be challenging to grasp concepts that are essential to bringing a project together at the end.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
Even as a graduate, I get the recognition and appreciation from the project manager and the client for the work I deliver. I really like how I am always given the encouragement, support and guidance from the other engineers. Going on-site and looking at the cables I designed, let me see how everything in a project is integrated and comes together.
What are the limitations of your job?
The project team must meet the schedule, this can be particularly challenging for a graduate as a lot of on-the-job knowledge and experience is required to complete certain tasks. As a result, it can become difficult to visualise and understand how things fit/work.

I would tell myself to eat on time, take it easy and have fun!
