The Australian construction industry is one of the country's sectors – find out which organisations made it to the Top 100 Graduate Employers.

The Australian construction industry is one of the country’s fastest-growing sectors, expanding by 9.8 per cent in 2018 alone. With the country’s population set to increase significantly over the coming decades, and urban areas already accounting for 50 per cent of the population, experts predict that the industry will continue to grow by at least 2 per cent per quarter.

Hence, it comes as no surprise that graduate employers in the construction and property services industry present an attractive career path to students from engineering, architecture, construction, property, and related disciplines.

The most recent GradAustralia Top 100 Graduate Employers survey saw businesses in the construction and property services industry secure eight places. The five highest-ranking firms were Lendlease (41), AECOM (46), Arup (58), GHD (62), and Aurecon (68).

The survey showed that students of degrees related to property and building services mostly prize diversity, with 93 per cent identifying it as a priority when selecting graduate employers. They’re also hard-working, with 68 per cent prepared to make sacrifices in their personal lives if it leads to career development.

Importantly, the top five employers in this industry have received glowing reviews from past students now employed in their graduate programs. For example, when interviewed by GradAustralia, one graduate at AECOM praised ‘the opportunities afforded to me as a young engineer’ and spoke of  ‘working with a great team of motivated professionals.’

Similarly, a graduate at GHD described it as having an  ‘amazing company culture’ and drew attention to its gender targets, LGBTI inclusion programs, and offer of maternity leave to the primary carer regardless of their gender.

‘The survey results send a clear message to employers in the construction and property services industry,’ says Geoff Adams, co-founder of GradAustralia. ‘Students in related disciplines value diversity more than anybody else, and go on to commend those employers which respond with clear commitments to ambitious diversity and inclusion initiatives.’
